A remarkable young Scout from Doncaster has been recognised for his compassion, resilience and fundraising efforts after supporting his close friend through life-changing circumstances. Edward Rotherforth has been presented with the Commissioners’ Commendation Award for showing outstanding kindness and dedication throughout an incredibly challenging time.

The award was presented by District Youth Leads Samuel Finn and Paige Werrett at the Doncaster Scouts Top Awards Presentation Day, held at the Hilton Garden Inn at Doncaster Racecourse. Edward received a standing ovation from young people, families and volunteers from across the District.

A Young Person Who Embodies Scouting Values

This is the first time Samuel and Paige have presented a Commendation Award in their roles as District Youth Leads, making Edward’s recognition especially meaningful. The local award is reserved for young people, volunteers or non-members who have made an exceptional contribution to Scouting or their community.

Edward’s close friend suffered life-changing injuries in July 2024 and remained in Sheffield Children’s Hospital until early 2025. The seriousness of the accident was widely reported at the time, including by the Doncaster Free Press.

Throughout this difficult period, Edward visited regularly, supported the family and showed unwavering kindness and strength.

Making a Difference Through Fundraising

Determined to help even more, Edward pledged to support the “Wishes for Will” GoFundMe campaign. He organised raffles, crafted resin ducks to sell and raised over £1,000 through his own efforts. His compassion and commitment also led to recognition on BBC Radio Sheffield, where he became a finalist in their Young Hero’s Awards and received a Make A Difference Award.

A Role Model for Young People Across Doncaster

District Youth Leads Samuel Finn and Paige Werrett praised Edward’s dedication, saying:

“Edward represents everything Scouting stands for – kindness, courage, friendship and taking action when it truly matters.”

Edward accepted his award in front of proud family members and a room full of young people and volunteers who celebrated his achievements.

A Truly Deserving Recipient

Edward’s story is an inspiring example of how young people can make an extraordinary difference in their communities. His compassion, resilience and selfless actions reflect the very best of Scouting.
