On 23rd April, 71st Doncaster Hunafa Scout Group proudly received the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service at a special presentation ceremony held at the Mansion House, Doncaster, generously hosted by the Civic Mayor of Doncaster, Councillor Tim Needham, and the Mayoress, Chris Brodhurst-Brown.
The award was formally presented by the Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Professor Dame Hilary Chapman DBE.
The King’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest honour awarded to local voluntary groups across the UK and is regarded as the equivalent of an MBE for volunteer organisations. It recognises exceptional service to communities and celebrates groups whose volunteers make a lasting and meaningful impact.
This year, 71st Doncaster Scout Group was the only recipient in Doncaster and the only Scout group in Yorkshire to receive this honour, making it a proud moment not only for the group, but for the wider city and community.
Founded with the vision of making Scouting accessible and inclusive for ethnically diverse communities, the group has grown over the past nine years into a thriving youth organisation and community hub. As the first ethnic minority-led Scout group in the area, it has provided young people with opportunities to build confidence, leadership skills and a strong sense of belonging, while also supporting families and strengthening community connections.
The ceremony brought together volunteers, young people, parents, community partners and local dignitaries to celebrate the achievement and recognise the dedication of those who have helped shape the group’s journey.
During the evening, the group reflected on how the award belongs to every volunteer, past and present, whose time, effort and commitment helped build the organisation from a small idea into a nationally recognised movement.
“Volunteering has helped me more than I expected — I’ve grown in confidence, built lasting friendships and developed new skills. What makes this Scout group so special is the people behind it. Every leader gives 100% — their time, energy, and care — to make each session meaningful and enjoyable.” Cub Leader, Muhammad Majeed.

“This group has taught me to be confident, outgoing, and resilient. It has helped me face fears I never thought I could, overcome challenges I never thought possible, and most importantly, realise that i am capable of more than I ever imagined. I am incredibly proud to be part of a group that serves others, supports one another, and has achieved something truly special” Explorer Scout, Talia Elkhalifa
They also paid tribute to the many organisations, leaders and supporters across Doncaster who opened doors, offered encouragement and believed in the vision from the very beginning.
The group expressed sincere thanks to Dame Hilary Chapman for presenting the award, to Councillor Tim Needham and Chris Brodhurst-Brown for their warmth and hospitality in hosting such a memorable occasion at the Mansion House, and honoured guests amongst the audience including Deputy Mayor Glyn Jones, Councillor Sue Farmer, and Sally Jameson MP.
As 71st Doncaster Scout Group looks to the future, its mission remains the same: to create opportunities for young people, strengthen communities, and ensure that Scouting remains a place where everyone feels they belong.
The King’s Award for Voluntary Service marks not only recognition of past achievements, but a renewed commitment to continue serving Doncaster with purpose, inclusion and pride.
