DESCRIPTION:Ready to take your Scouting skills to the next level? \nJoin us for a full weekend of bushcraft and survival skills at Squirrel Wood\, designed to challenge Scouts aged 12 and over\, build confidence and develop practical outdoor knowledge. \nThe Backwoods Skills Weekend provides Scouts with a unique opportunity to step away from modern comforts and immerse themselves in traditional woodland living\, developing practical skills that will stay with them long after the weekend has finished. \n\nEvent Overview\nThe Backwoods Skills Weekend is a hands on experience focused on bushcraft and survival skills\, giving Scouts the opportunity to learn and apply essential outdoor techniques in a real woodland environment. \nWorking in mixed patrols with Scouts from across the District\, participants will develop resilience\, teamwork and independence while learning practical skills such as shelter building\, fire lighting\, woodland cooking\, navigation and campcraft. \nThroughout the weekend\, Scouts will live in survival shelters\, prepare and cook their own meals over open fires and take part in a wide range of practical challenges designed to build confidence and self reliance. \n\nWhat to Expect\n\nBushcraft and survival skills activities.\nShelter building using tarps and natural materials.\nFire lighting and fire management.\nSafe knife\, axe and saw skills.\nPreparing\, cooking and eating wild game and fish.\nPractical woodland first aid and survival techniques.\nGlow stick night navigation challenge.\nTeam based challenges and camp projects.\nOvernight camping in survival shelters.\nSkills development in a real outdoor environment.\n\n\nWho Can Attend\n\nScouts aged 12 years and over.\nParticipants must have already achieved the Scout Outdoor Challenge Award.\nParticipants must understand that this event includes preparing\, cooking and eating wild game and fish. This includes handling\, skinning\, plucking\, gutting and cleaning animals as a core part of the programme.\nMaximum 32 young people.\nMaximum 2 Scouts per Troop initially.\n\n\nKey Details\n\nVenue: Squirrel Wood Scout Campsite.\nDates: Friday 2 October to Sunday 4 October 2026.\nArrival: From 6:00pm on Friday 2 October 2026.\nCollection: 2:00pm on Sunday 4 October 2026\, following the presentation of results and badges.\nCost: £45 per Scout.\nAccommodation: Survival shelters and tarps using survival bags.\nFood Included: All meals and refreshments throughout the weekend.\n\n\nKit List\nOutdoor Clothing & Footwear\nEach participant should bring: \n\nWaterproof shell jacket and waterproof trousers.\nLightweight warm layer (fleece or pullover).\nHeavy warm layer (thick fleece\, wool shirt or similar).\nAt least two T shirts or lightweight shirts.\nTwo pairs of sturdy outdoor trousers (jeans are not suitable).\nBelt.\nSeveral pairs of socks.\nSpare underwear.\nWarm wool or fleece hat.\nWalking boots (gaiters optional) or wellington boots.\n\nSleeping Equipment\nEach participant should bring: \n\nThree season sleeping bag.\nSleeping mat.\nSurvival bag or military style bivvy bag.\n\nPersonal Equipment\nEach participant should bring: \n\nPersonal water bottle.\nEmpty 2 litre drinks bottle.\nSmall personal first aid kit.\nHead torch with spare batteries.\nWatch (non smart watch recommended).\nMug.\nLarge rucksack suitable for carrying all equipment.\nPlastic bags to keep clothing dry.\nLarge bin bag for wet or dirty clothing.\n\nPersonal Wash Kit\nEach participant should bring: \n\nToothbrush and toothpaste.\nSoap.\nSmall towel.\nAntibacterial hand gel (recommended).\nInsect repellent.\nPersonal medication (please ensure details are included on the event consent form).\n\nUniform\n\nGroup necker only.\n\n\nImportant Information\nParticipants will be placed into mixed patrols with Scouts from different Groups across the District. Each patrol will work together throughout the weekend\, sharing responsibilities\, completing practical challenges and developing teamwork. \nAll meals and refreshments are provided throughout the weekend. As part of the programme\, Scouts will prepare\, cook and eat many of their own meals over open fires using a variety of traditional bushcraft techniques and wild game. \nThe weekend is designed to be immersive\, with participants sleeping in survival shelters and preparing meals over open fires. \nFurther joining instructions\, including arrival details and a full kit checklist\, will be issued approximately 30 days before the event. \n\nBooking & Payment\n\nBookings open: 10th July 2026.\nBookings close: 11th September 2026.\nBookings are made through the District website.\nThe entry fee is £45 per participant.\nInitially\, each Troop may book a maximum of 2 places. If places remain after the booking deadline\, additional places may be offered to Troops on a first come\, first served basis.\nPayment can be made using either of the following methods:\n\nPay online by card at the time of booking.\nPay by bank transfer:\n\nSelect Bank Transfer when making your booking.\nPlease forward the booking confirmation to your Group Treasurer to arrange payment.\nPayment must be made within 7 days of the booking being made.\n\n\n\n\nBookings are non refundable.\nFinal joining instructions will be sent to the lead booking contact approximately 30 days before the event.\n\n\nLeader Information\nThe event is fully planned\, managed and delivered by the District Events Team. \nGroups are not required to provide accompanying leaders unless specifically requested by the organisers. \nThe event is delivered under the District Nights Away Permit\, and the District will submit the required Nights Away Notification (NAN). \nNo additional permits are required from attending Groups. \n\nRisk Assessments\nRisk assessments will be available to download from this page closer to the event. Groups should review these documents before attending and consider whether any additional Group specific control measures are required for their own young people\, volunteers and equipment. \n\nEvent Photography\nPhotographs and video footage may be taken during the event and used by Doncaster Danum Scouts on our website\, social media channels and in future promotional material\, including leaflets and posters. \nBy making a booking\, Groups confirm that appropriate photography permissions for all participants have been recorded and managed in accordance with The Scouts’ policies. \n\nOSM Badge Information\nThe event also provides evidence towards additional badge requirements. Groups should update OSM where appropriate\, subject to the Section Team being satisfied that the individual Scout has completed the relevant requirement(s). \nThis includes evidence towards: \n\nSurvival Skills Activity Badge – Completion of all badge requirements.\nNights Away Staged Activity Badge – Two qualifying nights away.\nCamper Activity Badge\n\nBuild and use a suitable shelter.\nCook outdoors over an open fire.\nDemonstrate practical campcraft skills.\n\n\nAdventure Challenge Award – Take part in an adventurous activity.\nSkills Challenge Award\n\nPrepare and cook food outdoors.\n\n\nTeam Leader Challenge Award – Successfully lead a patrol or team during the weekend\, where applicable.

DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re new to Scouting or have years of experience\, this is your opportunity to learn\, share and connect. \nJoin us at Squirrel Wood for a full day of practical skills\, useful ideas and networking\, designed to support you in delivering great Scouting for young people. \n\nEvent Overview\nLeader Skills Day brings together volunteers from across Doncaster Danum District for a day of learning\, development and shared experience. \nWith a wide range of sessions available\, you will have the opportunity to choose the areas most relevant to you\, build your confidence\, develop new skills and share ideas with others. \nThe programme will include a mixture of practical activities and discussion based sessions. Some will take place indoors\, some outdoors and some in the Drey. Sessions in the Main Lodge will run back to back throughout the day. \nAlongside the learning\, there will be plenty of time to meet other volunteers\, exchange ideas and build stronger connections across the District. \nFollowing the daytime programme\, you can join us for an optional meal and Campfire Workshop. You can also sleep overnight with social in the lodge and enjoy breakfast with the team the following morning. \n\nWhat to Expect\n\nFive sessions during the day\nA mixture of practical and discussion based learning\nSessions suitable for different roles and levels of experience\nOpportunities to develop your skills and confidence\nIdeas to take back to your section\, team or Trustee Board\nTime to meet and learn from other volunteers\nLunch included\nOptional evening meal\nOptional Campfire Workshop\nOptional overnight sleeping with breakfast\nLodge will be open for sleeping and social after\n\n\nChoosing Your Sessions\nWhen booking\, you will select the five sessions you are most interested in attending. \nWe will use everyone’s choices to create individual timetables for the day. Pick up ideas and techniques that will help young people safely prepare and cook food outdoors. \nBranching Out and Achieving Your Wood Badge \nLearn about Branching Out\, how it supports your development as a volunteer and what you need to do to complete your Wood Badge. \nWriting a Great Scout Award Nomination \nLearn how to nominate someone for a Scout award and write a strong citation for a Good Service Award that clearly demonstrates their contribution and impact. \nRisk Assessments Made Simple \nLearn how to plan activities safely\, identify and manage risks and complete an effective risk assessment. The session will include practical advice\, useful tips and common pitfalls to avoid. \nYouShape and Youth Led Scouting \nDiscover what YouShape means\, why youth led Scouting matters and how young people can play a meaningful role in shaping their programme and Scouting experience. \nWhy Should Scouts Move On to Explorers? \nExplore the benefits of Explorer Scouting and how Scout Teams can support a positive transition. DESCRIPTION:Get ready for an unforgettable afternoon filled with festive fun\, Christmas magic and more activities than ever before. \nFrosty’s Winter Wonderland returns to Squirrel Wood for 2026\, bringing together Squirrels\, Beavers and Cubs from across Doncaster Danum District for crafts\, games\, festive food\, exciting activities and a special visit from Santa. \nAnd brand new for 2026\, Frosty’s Winter Wonderland will feature its very own Fun Fair. \n\nEvent Overview\nFrosty’s Winter Wonderland is a festive afternoon designed especially for our younger sections. \nYoung people can explore around 25 different activities at their own pace\, enjoy a hot dog and hot chocolate and visit Santa’s Grotto\, where every child will receive a present. \nSpaces are limited and this event is always popular\, so early booking is recommended. \n\nWhat to Expect\nThis event will operate on a Queue and Do basis. \nPlease note that we cannot guarantee participants will be able to take part in every activity or ride available. We will manage queues as much as possible throughout the event. If an activity has a long queue\, Groups should move on to another activity and return later. This will help young people avoid waiting around and potentially missing other activities. \nWith around 25 activities planned\, there will be plenty for everyone to enjoy. \nYoung people can get creative in the Elves’ Workshop\, make wooden Christmas tree decorations\, roast marshmallows and enjoy festive favourites including Christmas bingo and a snowman beetle drive. \nThere will also be plenty of action and adventure with Weaselling\, junior tomahawks\, Nerf Alley and hook a duck. \nAnd brand new for 2026\, Frosty’s Fun Fair will feature a giant Fun House\, Tea Cups and a festive Train. \nEvery child will also visit Santa’s Grotto\, receive a present and enjoy a hot dog and hot chocolate. \nBrand New for 2026: Frosty’s Fun Fair \nThis year\, Frosty’s Winter Wonderland is getting even bigger with the addition of an exciting Fun Fair. \nThe Fun Fair will include: \n\nA giant Fun House\nTea Cups\nA festive Train\n\nThese fantastic new attractions are included in the ticket price and will be available throughout the event. \nSanta’s Grotto \nEvery young person will have the opportunity to visit Santa’s Grotto and receive a present. \nGrotto times will be allocated to Groups in advance based on the number of young people attending. Leaders will receive their allocated time during the leader briefing. \nThis will help reduce queues and make sure every Group has plenty of time with the big man himself. \n\nWho Can Attend\nFrosty’s Winter Wonderland is open to: \n\nSquirrels\nBeavers\nCubs\n\nYoung people must attend as part of their section with their leaders. This is not a drop off event and individual families cannot make bookings. \n\nKey Details\n\nVenue: Squirrel Wood Campsite\nDate: Saturday 5 December 2026\nYoung people arrive: From 1.45pm\nEvent begins: 2.00pm\nEvent finishes: 6.00pm\nCost: £15 per Squirrel\, Beaver or Cub\n\nFood and Dietary Requirements \nEvery young person will receive: \n\nA hot dog\nA hot chocolate\n\nAdult volunteers will have access to hot drinks but must bring their own reusable cup or mug. \nThe name and dietary requirements of every young person must be provided when booking. This is essential because several activities involve food and hot dogs will be served to all young people. \nPlease make sure all allergy and dietary information is complete and accurate at the time of booking. \nExclusive Frosty’s 2026 Event Badge \nA limited edition Frosty’s 2026 event badge is available to celebrate the event. \nBadges can be ordered in advance for just £2 each when booking. \nA limited number will be available to purchase on the day for £2.50 each. As this is a limited run\, ordering in advance is recommended to avoid missing out. \n \n\nKit List\nYoung people should bring or wear: \n\nGroup neckerchief\, which must be worn\nChristmas jumper\, encouraged\nSuitable clothing and footwear for the weather\nA waterproof coat\nSpending money for the Squirrel Wood Shop\n\nAdult volunteers must bring their own reusable cup or mug if they would like a hot drink. \n\nImportant Information\n\nThis is a leader led event and young people must attend with their section\nSanta’s Grotto times will be allocated to Groups and provided at the leader briefing\nAttending leaders will be expected to support their young people throughout the event\nFurther event information will be shared with Groups closer to the event\n\n\nBooking & Payment\n\nBookings open: Thursday 10 September 2026\nBookings close: Sunday 8 November 2026\nYoung person ticket: £15\nAdvance event badge: £2\nBookings can only be made by Group leaders\nIndividual bookings cannot be made by parents or carers\nNames and dietary requirements must be provided at the time of booking\nEvent badges should be ordered during the booking process\nGroups will be invoiced for all places and badges booked\nPayment must be made by bank transfer\n\n\nLeader Information\nLeaders must arrive at Squirrel Wood by 1.00pm. \nA leader briefing will take place at 1.15pm before young people begin arriving from 1.45pm. Leaders will receive important event information and their Group’s allocated Santa’s Grotto time during this briefing. \nEach section will receive complimentary adult places in line with the required ratios: \n\nSquirrels: One complimentary adult for every four young people\nBeavers: One complimentary adult for every six young people\nCubs: One complimentary adult for every eight young people\n\nGroups must ensure that the correct number of adults attend and that their usual section ratios are maintained throughout the event. \nAttending leaders will need to help participants move through the activities efficiently. This includes supporting young people with activities such as arts and crafts and helping event volunteers supervise activities where required. \nVolunteers Needed \nCalling All Leaders and Young Leaders \nTo help make Frosty’s Winter Wonderland a success\, we need additional leaders and Young Leaders to assist the event team throughout the day. \nVolunteer roles will include: \n\nRunning games and activities\nAssisting in the arts and crafts area\nHelping to move props\, decorations and lighting\nSupervising activities\nDirecting participants around the site\nHelping during arrival and collection\n\nTo offer your help\, please email Glynis Robinson. \n\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\nEvent Terms and Waiver\nBy making a booking\, the Group acknowledges and agrees to the following event terms: \n\nAll places must be booked in advance by a Group leader\nGroups cannot arrive on the day without a confirmed booking\nFull payment is required 30 days before the event\nAll places booked are non refundable\nYoung people must attend as part of their section with the appropriate number of leaders\nGroups must maintain the correct adult to young person ratios throughout the event\nWe cannot guarantee that participants will be able to take part in every activity or ride available.
